Public Servant Knows That Giving Back Matters

James and Marie MercreadyAs a lifelong public servant, James Mercready ’87 understands the profound satisfaction in helping others. “Because I’m grateful for the experience, education, and life skills gained through my own Monmouth journey, I choose to give back so I can help make a difference for someone else,” James says.

Understanding the ways in which educational access shaped their own lives, and sharing a passion for the benefits of higher education in particular, James and his wife Marie established the James Mercready '87 Endowed Scholarship through a planned gift. James feels strongly that his Monmouth University (then, College) political science education benefited him in his professional career as the Toms River Fire Prevention Bureau Chief, as well as his volunteer activities during retirement. He hopes the legacy left through their scholarship gift will aid future generations of students in achieving their own dreams, setting them up for successful lives post-graduation.

“I am extremely proud to be a Monmouth alum and will always consider my time earning my degree a great experience,” says James. “I would encourage all alumni to consider giving back. What better way to pay it forward?”
